Earl of Reckoning Grove
The afternoon Brent decided to cook dinner for the entire commune, Dana had a feeling.
Not a bad feeling, exactly. More the kind of feeling you get when someone volunteers to fix something that isn't quite broken yet, with tools that aren't quite right, and a look on their face that makes it clear they haven't considered, not even once, that it might not work out.
She found him in the kitchen an hour before dinner, standing at the counter with a wooden spoon and the expression of a man who had been entrusted with something important and knew it.
"I am making Alabama white barbecue chicken," he said, before she could ask. His Southern drawl gave the announcement a slow, ceremonial weight, like a mayor cutting a ribbon. "For everyone."
"Okay," Dana said.
"It's a big deal."
"I believe you."
"It's regional. It's history." He leaned toward her slightly, dropping his voice the way people do when they're about to share something classified. His eyes went left, then right. "The secret is Duke's mayonnaise. Real Duke's. You understand what I'm saying?"
"I think so," Dana said.
"Good." He straightened up. "Where do y'all keep it?"
"We don't have any."
He looked at her.
"We don't have mayonnaise at all," she said. "We make a yogurt-based spread."
Brent went still for a moment. Then he nodded slowly, the nod of a man who had decided something was fine before he had finished deciding. "Okay," he said. "I'm good at improvisation."
He turned to the shelf. Dana watched him scan the jars, pick one up, check it, set it back. He reached for a second jar near the back. Plain label. White contents. He held it up, gave it a confident shake, and set it by the bowl.
Dana looked at it. Something tugged at her.
"Brent, what's that one?"
"Yogurt spread," he said, already moving on to the vinegar.
She looked at the jar again. It was sitting with the label facing away. She took a step forward, tilted it toward her.
Vanilla bean.
She opened her mouth. Then she looked at Brent, who was now humming quietly to himself while measuring out vinegar, fully committed, utterly confident, a man in complete harmony with a plan that was about to go very wrong.
She closed her mouth.
Dana went back to the garden.

By the time the dinner bell rang, the smoke pit had been going for two hours and the smell coming off it was genuinely magnificent — deep and woody and promising, the kind of smell that makes people walk a little faster. The commune filed into the farmhouse with real appetite, found their seats, and looked at the platter in the center of the table.
The chicken was very dark.
Not the rich mahogany of properly smoked meat but the particular blackened quality of something that had spent too long over uneven heat. It sat in a pale, glossy sauce that caught the light in a way that was hard to categorize.
Brent stood at the front of the room.
"Before y'all eat," he said, "I just want to take a second to explain what you're about to experience."
Charlie, seated closest to the front, sat up with the expression of a man who'd been told the lecture was going to be good.
Grady looked at his empty plate.
"What you're looking at is Alabama white barbecue chicken," Brent continued. "And I know some of y'all have never heard of Alabama white sauce, and that is honestly one of the saddest things I've ever had to say out loud."
A genuine laugh from the table. Even Grady's mouth moved slightly.
"So here's what you need to understand." Brent clasped his hands. "In 1925, in Decatur, Alabama, a man named Big Bob Gibson worked the railroad during the week. On weekends he dug a pit in his backyard and smoked meat. When it was done he'd toss it in a bowl with his sauce until every piece was coated." He paused. "The sauce. Mayonnaise, apple cider vinegar, black pepper, little bit of lemon, little bit of horseradish. That's it. And I know what you're thinking — mayonnaise? But a mayo base with acid cuts through smoked meat in a way that no tomato sauce, no mustard sauce, no Kansas City molasses situation can touch."
"Kansas City puts molasses in their sauce," he added, with the tone of someone describing a parking violation that had escalated. "Memphis does a dry rub, which is fine. Carolina uses straight vinegar, which has its place. But Alabama figured it out a hundred years ago and we've been quietly right ever since."
"Is it spicy?" Vlad asked.
Vlad was not a man who asked many questions. When he did, people tended to answer them.
"Tangy," Brent said. "There's a difference. Spicy is easy. Tangy is sophisticated."
Vlad nodded once, with the calm of a man who had never met a physical challenge he couldn't outlast. Tangy was not going to be a problem.
"My grandmother made this every Sunday. Her mother before her. You did not mess with the ratios. You did not substitute ingredients." He paused. "Anyway. What you're about to eat is not just dinner. It's a hundred years of Alabama tradition, adapted for the ingredients available here at Reckoning Grove, which I want to acknowledge is a challenge I accepted willingly and believe I have met."
He sat down.
"You're welcome," he added.
Calvin reached forward and took a piece of chicken. That released everyone else. Plates were filled. The commune began eating.
Nobody said anything.
That was the first bad sign.
Charlie chewed with great focus and swallowed. "Wow," he said.
Brent looked at him. "Wow good or wow surprising."
Charlie thought about it. "Both?"
James took one bite, set his fork down with great care, picked up his Diet Coke, and drank the entire can in one long, steady pull. He set the empty can back on the table and looked straight ahead.
Vlad took a large bite without hesitation, chewed twice, and went very still. He chewed two more times. Something moved across his face — not pain exactly, more the expression of a man who had been surprised by something and was refusing, on principle, to admit it. He swallowed. He sat up straighter. He took another bite immediately, as if the second bite might somehow fix the first.
It did not fix it.
Calvin took a single bite, set his fork down, and reached for the bread. He tore off a piece, placed it carefully over the chicken on his plate, and pressed it down with two fingers. Then he tore off another piece and placed that one over the part that was still showing. He looked at his plate. A small edge of chicken was still visible. He reached for the bread basket again.
Grady watched him do this without comment.
Grady chewed once. Twice. Set his fork down. Looked at the far wall.
Dana took a bite and held it for a moment in the way you hold something when you're trying to identify it. She swallowed. She reached for her water.
At the head of the table, Brent ate with initial confidence. He chewed his first bite slowly, nodding. The nodding slowed. A small crease appeared between his eyebrows. He took a sip of water. He picked up another piece, inspected it, took a smaller bite.
It was not better.
He set it down.
He looked at the sauce. He looked at the chicken. He looked at the sauce again.
Something was sweet. Not tangy-sweet. Just sweet. Confusingly, persistently sweet, underneath everything else.
He went very still.
Then he stood up, walked to the prep counter, and looked at the jar he'd used.
He picked it up and turned it around.
Vanilla bean.
He stood there for a moment.
"Brent?" Dana said, carefully.
"I thought it was the plain one," he said.
Charlie's head came up. "What's the plain one."
Brent set the jar down. "I made the sauce with vanilla yogurt."
A beat of total silence.
Then Charlie slapped the table. "You made dessert chicken."
"It is not dessert chicken."
"It's a little dessert chicken."
Grady pushed his plate approximately one inch away from himself. It was a small gesture and a clear one.
Calvin looked at his bread. Then at the chicken. Then at his bread again, like a man confirming a decision he'd already made twenty minutes ago.
Vlad looked down at his plate. He had eaten three pieces. He said nothing. He picked up a fourth.
Dana pressed her lips together. "I'm sorry," she said. "I saw the jar. I should have said something."
"No," Brent said. He looked at the platter with the hollow dignity of a man accepting a verdict. "This one's on me."
The relief around the table was immediate. Charlie laughed first — loud, helpless — and that broke everything open. Calvin's shoulders dropped two inches. Grady made a sound that was unambiguously a laugh, short and sharp, like something that had been waiting to get out. James looked at his empty Diet Coke can with an expression that suggested he wished he had another one.
"I'll get the beans," Dana said, already moving toward the kitchen.
Dinner that night was bread, canned beans, and the specific warmth that comes from a shared disaster handled well. Charlie had three helpings of beans with the enthusiasm of a man who had been hoping for this outcome all along. Brent ate his bread and said very little.
Vlad finished the chicken.
All of it.
Nobody mentioned this, which seemed like the right call.
Once, toward the end, he looked at the abandoned platter.
"The smoke smelled incredible, though," he said. "You have to give me that."
"The smoke," Grady said, "was excellent."
Everyone agreed. It was, without question, the best part of the meal.

That night the bonfire was going by the time the dishes were done, and the commune settled into its familiar evening shape — people drifting out with mugs and jackets, finding places in the circle of firelight, the conversation starting low and easy the way it always did.
It was Charlie who brought up dinner first, because Charlie never left anything sitting when he could pick it up and look at it.
"I've been thinking about that sauce," he said.
"Good," said Brent.
"The flavor was really—" Charlie searched for the word. "Layered."
"That's the vinegar," Brent said. "You're tasting the complexity."
"Is that what that was," said Grady, from across the fire.
Brent pointed at him. "You cleaned your plate, Grady."
"I was hungry."
"You had seconds."
"I said I was hungry."
A few people laughed. Brent grinned. The fire popped and settled.
"Look," Brent said, leaning back on his hands, "the sauce was a little different without the right ingredients. I'll acknowledge that. The yogurt spread is not Duke's mayo. That's not a reflection on my cooking, that's a reflection on our supply situation. Under normal circumstances—"
"Under normal circumstances," Grady said, "you would have had the right ingredients."
"Exactly."
"And you still might have—"
"Grady."
"I'm just saying—"
"The technique was correct," Brent said. "The technique was sound. When you account for the ingredient substitutions, the dish was exactly what it was supposed to be."
"And what was it supposed to be?"
"Alabama white barbecue chicken."
"Hm," said Grady.
Brent looked around the circle. "The point is, I don't really make mistakes like that. Not cooking mistakes. That's just genuinely not my thing."
The fire shifted. Someone pulled their jacket tighter.
Calvin looked at Brent from across the circle with a patient, unhurried expression. He said nothing. He had learned, over his years at Reckoning Grove, that silence at the right moment saved a great deal of energy.
"I mean it," Brent said. "When have I ever — name one time."
Charlie opened his mouth.
Brent pointed at him. "A real mistake, Charlie."
Charlie closed his mouth, thought about it, opened it again.
"The composting incident," he said.
"That was a misunderstanding about the ratios, which I subsequently corrected."
"The fence repair."
"The fence is standing."
"It's leaning."
"Structurally it's standing." Brent looked to the rest of the group for support that did not come. "Okay. One time. Fine. The fence leans slightly, which is—"
"Brent."
It was Grady's voice. Low, flat, deliberate. The voice of a man who had been waiting.
Brent turned.
Grady was staring into the fire. He didn't look up. He just said, very calmly: "You want to tell them about Earl? Or should I?"
The circle went quiet.
Brent's eyes went wide. "That," he said, "is completely different."
"Is it."
"That is a completely separate category of—"
"Charlie," Grady said.
Charlie was already sitting forward, both hands on his knees, with the bright-eyed energy of a man who has been waiting for exactly this invitation. "Oh, I have thoughts about Earl," he said.
"No," Brent said. "No, let's not—"
But Charlie was already talking.

The way Charlie told it, it had started with government surveillance.
"I first noticed Earl," Charlie said, with the careful precision of a man presenting evidence, "approximately three weeks before Brent claimed he noticed Earl. A fat squirrel, unusual size, glossy eyes, appearing consistently near the RV at the same time each morning. Now. Most people see a squirrel and they think: squirrel. I see a squirrel and I think: why is this squirrel here, and why does it keep looking directly at the RV, and why did a low-flying aircraft pass over the property exactly nine days before the squirrel first appeared?"
"Those things are not connected," Brent said.
"I'm not saying they are," Charlie said. "I'm saying I noticed them."
"That's exactly what you're saying."
"What I'm saying is that I flagged it. As a precaution. I began documenting Earl's movements. Arrival time, departure time, which direction he came from, which direction he went. I have notes."
"You have notes on a squirrel," said one of the younger commune members.
"I have notes on an anomaly," Charlie said. "The distinction matters."
Grady, who had started this, now sat back with the expression of a man who had created something he could no longer fully control. He added, in a lower register, the version underneath Charlie's version — the facts, stripped of interpretation.
What had actually happened, as best as anyone could reconstruct it:
Brent had begun, sometime in his second month at Reckoning Grove, leaving the door of the RV cracked open at night. For air, he said, when asked. It was a warm summer and the RV held heat and he liked to hear the night sounds. These were all true things. They were not the complete picture.
The complete picture included Earl.
Earl was a Douglas squirrel — the native variety of the Oregon high desert, compact and quick as a rule, though Earl was an exception to the compact part. Earl had discovered, in the way that wild animals discover things, that the RV contained a reliable source of granola, oat clusters, and a person who found him endearing rather than alarming. Over approximately three weeks, Earl had graduated from receiving breakfast outside the RV door to receiving it from Brent's hand to occasionally being inside the RV when breakfast was served.
Brent had named him on day four.
He had not mentioned any of this to anyone at the commune.
The situation had come to light — or rather had been discovered by Grady, which was not quite the same as coming to light — on a Tuesday morning in late August. Grady had come to the RV at first light to talk to Brent about a fence repair, a job that had been discussed and rescheduled twice and that Grady had decided needed to happen that morning. He had knocked. No answer. He had opened the door.
Grady paused here in his telling and looked into the fire.
"He was asleep," Grady said. "Brent was asleep. Flat on his back."
"I was resting," Brent said.
"On his chest," Grady continued, as if Brent hadn't spoken, "was a very large squirrel. Sitting up. Looking at me."
"Earl was just—"
"Two more squirrels were on the windowsill."
"Those were Merle and the Governor, they were just—"
"One of them," Grady said, "was taking apart a granola bar on the table. Methodically. Like he'd done it before."
A few people laughed. Brent held up a hand.
"Okay, first of all," he said, "Earl had never done anything to anybody. Earl was a good squirrel. He had excellent manners, he was clean, he was—"
"He was a wild animal living in your RV," Grady said.
"He wasn't living there. He was visiting."
"He had a corner," Grady said.
"He preferred that corner. That's different from—"
"He had reorganized things in that corner, Brent. He had moved your boots."
This got a bigger laugh. Brent pointed at the group. "They were in his way," he said, which made it worse.
Charlie had picked up the story by now, weaving his version back in. After Grady had told him, which Grady acknowledged was, in retrospect, a miscalculation.
Charlie had taken what he called a precautionary approach. This had involved, over the following week: leaving handwritten notes near the RV door suggesting that Earl might want to consider relocating, constructing what he described as a "signal disruption device" from a tin foil-wrapped colander and some wire, and attempting on one occasion to have a direct conversation with Earl through the RV window, speaking in a low, serious tone, explaining that the commune's neutrality was a fragile thing.
"I used the colander," Brent said. "As a colander."
"I noticed," Charlie said. "I found it full of lentils."
"It's a colander, Charlie."
"It was a signal disruption device."
"It was a colander that you had wrapped in tin foil for reasons I chose not to ask about."
The story moved to Dana's discovery, which both Grady and Charlie described with a particular care — not because it was complicated but because Dana's reaction had been the kind that stays with you. She had gone to the farmhouse kitchen one morning and found Earl in the oat supply. Not rummaging through it, not scattering it. Sitting in it, with the tranquil confidence of an animal that had been doing this for a while and saw no reason to stop.
Dana had looked at Earl. Earl had looked at Dana. Then Dana had walked to the farmhouse door, opened it, held it open, and waited.
Earl had left. But slowly. And without, by any account, appearing embarrassed.
What followed were three days of what the commune had taken to calling, privately, “the Earl Negotiations”.
A trail of acorns laid from the RV to the tree line. Earl ate the acorns and came back. A humane trap borrowed from a neighbor in town; Earl ignored it completely. Charlie's counter-surveillance protocol, which involved mirrors angled at specific points around the property and which Charlie declined to fully explain even when asked directly. And finally Grady, who had arrived at the RV door one morning with the expression of a man who had run out of patience, standing there pointing at the tree line for what Brent later claimed was "maybe five minutes" and what Grady later claimed was "twenty minutes, possibly more, and I want that noted."
"I was processing," Brent said.
"You argued with me," Grady said. "For twenty minutes. About a squirrel."
"I was making the point that Earl hadn't actually done anything wrong, which is true."
"He was in the oat supply, Brent."
"That one time—"
"Multiple times," Dana said, from her seat at the edge of the firelight.
Everyone turned to look at her. She had been quiet through most of the story, sitting with her mug, listening.
"Three times that I found," she said. "Possibly more."
Brent looked at her. "You never told me it was three times."
"I didn't want to have the conversation."
A beat of silence. Then Brent laughed, and the rest of the circle laughed with him, and even Dana smiled in the way she had, the smile that meant she had been privately amused for longer than she'd let on.
Earl had relocated on his own, eventually — sometime in the first cold week of September, when the nights dropped sharp and the mornings turned gray. He'd gone where squirrels go, somewhere in the timber past the eastern field. Merle and the Governor had gone with him. One morning the RV door had been cracked open at dawn and nobody had come, and the next morning the same, and by the third morning it was clear they weren't coming back.
Brent had left a small pile of oats outside the door for another week.
Just in case.

The fire was burning lower now. Someone put on another log and the flames steadied and the warmth pushed back against the cool high desert night.
Brent was quiet for a moment, looking into the fire.
"Okay," he said finally. He scratched the back of his neck in the way he had when something had gotten through his defenses. "I mean. When you put it like that."
More laughter, warm and easy.
"In my defense," he said, "Earl was genuinely a good squirrel. You didn't know him the way I did."
"He had intelligent eyes," Charlie said, nodding seriously.
"He really did," Brent said, with complete sincerity. "Very alert. Very aware. You could tell there was something going on in there."
"Government-level surveillance awareness," Charlie said.
"That's—" Brent started, then stopped. "I mean. I'm not saying you're right."
"I'm not saying I'm right either," Charlie said. "I'm just saying I'm not saying I'm wrong."
Grady made a sound. It was low and brief and came from somewhere around the area of a laugh without committing to being one. Brent heard it and turned and looked at him across the fire, and Grady looked back, and something passed between them that neither of them would have been able to name but that both of them understood.
The conversation moved on, the way it does on good nights — not going anywhere in particular, not needing to, just finding its own level like water. Someone mentioned the garden. Someone else had heard something in the hills the previous night and couldn't decide if it was a coyote. Charlie had thoughts about the coyote.
Brent leaned back on his hands and looked up at the Oregon sky, which was doing what it did out here in the high desert on clear nights — going so deep and dark and star-crowded that it stopped looking like a sky and started looking like something else, something without a name.
"I still say the sauce was good," he said, quietly, to nobody in particular.
Nobody argued. Not even Grady.
The fire burned. The stars held. And somewhere out in the timber past the eastern field, Earl slept the untroubled sleep of a squirrel who had made his choices and stood by them, which was really all any of them were doing, out here at Reckoning Grove.
